Your Dad in a Song
It's the time of the year again which we used to think of cool surprises and gifts to give to our dear fathers as most children do. They are known as the "haligi ng tahanan" locally and traditionally but being a father is not easy. I've been living in this world for 27 years with my dad and I've seen him chasing the time and every opportunity together with my mom to sustain our needs. Although he is not perfect, in fact, he drinks a lot of "tanduay" and gets drunk easily after 5-7 shots, he is still a good father to me.
When I was a child, I used to think that I wish he is not my father, I'd rather have the one who is a CEO of great company, a nice professor in a well-known university, an engineer or architect of the tallest skyscraper in the world, or one of the famous writers of this generation. It might sound weird or funny but I know a lot of kids who also used to think the way I think of my father especially when you see his mistakes and imperfections all the time.
Whether you like it or not, your father is your father no matter what kind of a human being he is. No matter he was with you in good times and in bad times for a long time, or he abandoned you ever since you were born, or left you tragically, he is still a father and you wouldn't be here reading this blog and enjoying your life right now without him.
Let me share with you my top 10 songs dedicated for dads. I know dads are different and unique. These songs will help you uncover his nature as a father towards you as his children and do not focus on his imperfections as a person. In the scriptures, both the old and new testament commanded us to honor them for us to have a long and satisfying life:
"Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you."
- Exodus 20:12
" Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth." - Ephesians 6:2-3
So here goes my first song on the list, "Dance With My Father" by Luther Vandross. This is a popular song and widely heard in every wedding day. It shows the good memories of a child with his father, and a good picture of a good relationship between a father and his child.
The second song is from Cat Stevens which is "Father and Son". It depicts a father giving advice to his son to keep calm and enjoy life the way it should be.
Third in our spot is the "Leader of the Band" by Dan Fogelberg. There's a deep meaning of this song if you feel it with all your heart. Our fathers are mortal men, they grow old and die too but the best thing that they can leave to us is a legacy that can touches every heart.
The fourth one that I love to share with you guys is a song by Heartland which is entitled "I Loved Her First". It's a father showing his great love and care for her daughter from the day she was born to his last breath. It is a very emotional song for every bride on her wedding day while walking down the aisle with his father. I'm sure you can't help crying when you are in this moment of your life.
Fifth on my list is "Piece by Piece" by Kelly Clarkson. This is a sad song compared to the previous songs that I introduced but as you listen or read the lyrics, you will realized the beauty of a foster parent or a non-biological father who is willing to take care of you and gives you a hope in spite of what you've been through. You might not have a biological father by your side but you can have a grandfather, a brother, an uncle or a stepfather who still brings out the best in you.
"Lead Me" by Sanctus Real is my top six. I believe that a strong man finds hope, trust and confidence in God, our creator, who knows our strengths and weaknesses. A good father is full of wisdom and love. He is not perfect but he must humbly trust Him at all times so he can lead his family in the right direction.
Next on the list is the "Butterfly Kisses" by Bob Carlisle. This is a song that shows how a father appreciates and loves her child or daughter. It's so good and lovely to know that your father loves you the way you are, especially if you are a wise and a prayerful one as the scriptures says in Proverbs 23:24, "The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice, And he who begets a wise child will delight in him."
The top 8 song for dads is from Keith Urban which entitled "A Song for Dad". Let's admit it, fathers are disciplinarian and most of us have experienced those inconvenient house rules and disciplinary actions during our childhood and teenage life. Thank God to our fathers, we learned a lot from them and they helped us to be good citizens of our country. In proverbs 20:7, "The righteous man walks in his integrity; His children are blessed after him." These are the words of how good to be disciplined. In another verse it says "Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them."- Proverbs 13:24.
The last-two song is common to everyone who is being raised by someone who is good, loving, strong, and wise. A father is naturally someone who raises his child to the best of his ability. You can dedicate this to your dad on father's day or to his birthday if he is an example or he has the most descriptions in this song or simply because you just can relate to it.
The last but not the least is a song from Chris Tomlin which entitled "Good Good Father". Nothing beats the love of our heavenly father and our Lord Jesus Christ to us- His children.
He is compassionate - "As a father pities his children, So the Lord pities those who fear Him." (Psalm 103:13)
He is disciplinarian - "My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor detest His correction; For whom the Lord loves He corrects, just as a father the son in whom he delights." (Proverbs 3:11-12)
He is faithful - "Therefore know that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments". ( Deuteronomy 7:9)
He is merciful and loving - "But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus." (Ephesians 2:4-6)
He is strong - "The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?" ( Psalm 27:1)
